AA Award Restaurant with Rooms of the Year 2023/2024

We’re delighted to have been awarded the AA Award for Best Restaurant with Rooms in Scotland 2023/24 at the AA Hospitality Awards.

This esteemed award comes as a thrilling addition to our collection of awards and accolades over the last four decades since we opened our doors on Castle Hill. The vision of James Thomson, we’re proud neighbours to Edinburgh Castle and have had the chance to greet thousands of welcomed guests over the years. The Original Dining Room

The Secret Garden

Bask in the gentle embrace of sunlight streaming through the arched windows as you delight in Afternoon Tea, savour a delectable Two-course lunch, or relish a lavish dinner within The Secret Garden. Originally constructed in 1990, this enchanting space was meticulously transformed into the exquisite restaurant you now behold, courtesy of the visionary James Thomson.

The Secret Garden's interior is adorned with a series of artfully painted doors and panels, which beautifully depict facets of Edinburgh's historic wine trade with France. This rich tradition is upheld by our extensive wine cellar, housing an impressive collection of 900 unique selections. Among our many accolades, we proudly boast the prestigious Wine Spectator Best Award of Excellence.

The Heriot offers a captivating view overlooking George Heriot School, the source of inspiration for Hogwarts in J.K. Rowling's beloved children's book series, Harry Potter.
