Are your facilities accessible?

Unfortunately not. The Witchery is set within historic 16th-century buildings in Edinburgh’s Old Town, which retain much of their original character. This means there are 18 steps to the Secret Garden dining room and four steps to the Original Dining Room, which may make access challenging for some guests.

Can I visit The Witchery just for drinks?

Unfortunately not - our atmospheric spaces are reserved exclusively for dining. However, guests can enjoy a wide selection of wines, cocktails, and aperitifs as part of their dining experience, making The Witchery a memorable choice for drinks paired with a meal beside Edinburgh Castle.

Is The Witchery suitable for special occasions?

Is The Witchery near Edinburgh Castle?

Yes - The Witchery is located in the center of Edinburgh, at the heart of The Old Town. You'll find us right beside the gates of Edinburgh Castle, at the very top of The Royal Mile. It’s one of the city’s most iconic and convenient locations.

Is it possible to book a table for desserts?

We respectfully ask that all dining guests enjoy a minimum of one main course per person. While desserts cannot be booked on their own, our menus feature a wide selection of indulgent puddings and sweet treats to complete your dining experience at The Witchery.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking tables and suites well in advance, especially for weekends, seasonal menus, and special occasions. As one of Edinburgh’s most sought-after dining and stay experiences, reservations fill quickly - early booking helps avoid disappointment and ensures your preferred date and time.

What is the difference between the two dining rooms?

The Original Dining room is lined with tapestry and leather panelling and has a low oak painted heraldic ceiling. The Secret Garden is an elegant room with a high, painted ceiling depicting images of the tarot, and French doors leading to an urn-filled terrace. 

Is the Secret Garden suitable for winter?

Yes - the Secret Garden is a fully enclosed indoor dining room, making it warm and comfortable throughout the winter months. With its stone walls, candlelight, and historic character, it offers a romantic and atmospheric setting whatever the season.

When is food served at The Witchery?

The Witchery restaurant is open daily from 12 noon until 10:30pm (last reservation), serving seasonal dishes that celebrate the best of Scottish produce.

  • Lunch: 12 noon – 4:30pm

  • Afternoon Tea: 3pm – 4pm (Monday–Friday only)

  • Dinner: 5pm – 10:30pm

Do you serve breakfast?

Yes — breakfast is available exclusively for residents staying in our suites. Guests can enjoy it either in the Original Dining Room, with its elegant historic atmosphere, or as a hamper delivered to their suite. All dishes are made from the finest seasonal Scottish produce, providing a luxurious start to the day.

Is The Witchery a good location for proposals?

Yes. The Witchery is a favourite destination for romantic proposals. Our dramatic setting, gothic interiors, and exceptional service make every occasion unforgettable. Do you have a car park?

Unfortunately, The Witchery does not have its own car park. However, there is an NCP car park just a 5-minute walk away at the corner of Johnston Terrace and Castle Terrace, EH1 2EW. Its central location makes it easy for guests to access both the restaurant and suites.

Do you have a dress code?

We encourage a smart dress code in our dining rooms, reflecting the luxurious and historic setting. Many guests choose to dress for celebrations, anniversaries, or special occasions, making every meal a memorable and elegant experience in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Do you cater for special dietary needs, for example gluten-free, vegan etc.?

Yes - The Witchery can accommodate a wide range of dietary requirements, including gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, and other special requests. Please inform your server or our reservations team in advance so our chefs can tailor your meal, ensuring a memorable dining experience with the finest Scottish produce.

Do you accommodate children? Do you have a kids' menu?

The Witchery can accommodate children aged 10 and over. We do not offer a children’s menu, as our dining rooms are entirely candlelit and we aim to maintain the romantic and atmospheric ambiance of the restaurant. This ensures both a safe and memorable experience for all guests.

Do you accommodate large groups?

Due to the intimate and atmospheric nature of our dining rooms, The Witchery can accommodate parties of up to six guests. This ensures that every table enjoys a comfortable, private, and memorable dining experience in one of Edinburgh’s most historic and romantic settings.

Do you have a gift shop?

Yes - The Witchery has its own Witchery Shop, located just across the street from the restaurant. Guests can browse a curated selection of luxury gifts, fine wines, and exclusive products, making it the perfect stop for souvenirs or special treats to take home from your Edinburgh visit.

Are you dog-friendly?

Unfortunately, The Witchery does not accommodate dogs. However, our sister property, Prestonfield House, is dog-friendly. Dogs are welcome in all bedrooms and public areas there, with the exception of Rhubarb Restaurant. We would be happy to arrange taxis between the two properties, so that guests can still enjoy a dining experience at The Witchery.

Are all of your menus available throughout the year?

To ensure the best possible experience, The Witchery offers a la carte menus only during peak periods, including July, August, and the two weeks over Christmas and New Year. At other times, guests can enjoy our full seasonal menus, showcasing the finest Scottish produce in each dish.

How long do you keep lost property for?

All lost property at The Witchery is catalogued and stored for up to one month. If no arrangements are made for collection within this time, items are kindly donated to charity. Guests are encouraged to contact us promptly to recover any belongings and ensure a smooth process.
